Information:
Accelerator Pedals
Pedal (2) is the accelerator pedal for the scraper engine; pedal (3) is the accelerator pedal for the tractor engine. Push a pedal down to increase the engine speed. Release the pedal to decrease the engine speed. Both pedals can be pushed at the same time with the right foot to make both engines accelerate evenly. Pull back on the toe of pedal (3) to stop the tractor engine.Button (4) is the high idle throttle lock. When the button is pushed in, it keeps the tractor and scraper engines at high idle. Pull the button out again to have manual control of the accelerator pedals. If the service brake pedal is pushed while the high idle throttle lock is pushed in, the high idle throttle lock will be released.
BRAKE AND ACCELERATOR PEDALS
1. Brake pedal. 2. Scraper accelerator pedal. 3. Tractor accelerator pedal.
THROTTLE LOCK
4. Throttle lock button.Service Brake
Pedal (1), to the left of the accelerator pedals, activates the service brakes on the tractor and the scraper when it is pushed. If the high idle throttle lock is pushed in when the service brake pedal is pushed in, it will be released.Retarder
Lever (5) is the retarder control. Pull back on the lever for retarder brake action. The farther back the lever is pulled, the greater the retarder brake action. Push the lever forward to stop the brake action.
RETARDER CONTROL LEVER
5. Lever.Steering
Steering wheel (6) controls the steering of the 639D. The 639D has 90° left and right steering and 18° left and right hitch movement for good maneuverability and stability. There is also an attachment auxiliary steering system. This is a ground driven system that supplies enough hydraulic power for steering if the engine stops while the vehicle is in motion.
STEERING WHEEL
6. Steering wheel.Transmission Range Control
The 639D tractor has an eight speed forward and one speed reverse semiautomatic transmission. Transmission range control lever (7) must be moved manually to 1st and 2nd speeds. 1st and 2nd speeds have torque converter drive. Speeds 3 through 8 are direct drive. The range control lever can also be moved manually through speeds 3 through 8 or it can be moved directly from 2nd speed to any speed from 3 to 8. If this is done, the transmission will shift automatically from second speed, to the speed the range control is in.When the transmission is in 1st or 2nd speed, it can be put in the variable capacity torque converter (VCTC) mode. The lever must be moved toward the operator from 1st or 2nd speed into one of the two VCTC ranges. When the transmission is in one of the VCTC ranges, it has more power for the hydraulics and less power at the wheels, to prevent slippage and excessive tire wear.Transmission Neutral Lock Lever
Transmission neutral lock lever (8) locks the transmission range selector (7) in neutral. Move the selector to neutral, push down on lever (8), and turn it clockwise to lock the range selector in neutral. Push down on lever (8) and turn
