START BY:a) remove engine front supportb) remove water pumpc) remove oil pan plate 1. Put identification on wires (1) for assembly purposes and disconnect them from the alternator. 2. Remove three bolts (3) that fasten alternator bracket (2) to the timing gear cover. Remove alternator and bracket as a unit. 3. Remove the bolts that fasten the air conditioning compressor (4) to the timing gear cover. Move compressor to the side of the engine. 4. Remove mounting bolts and slide axle suspension pump (5) from the timing gear cover. 5. Install a strap and tooling (A) on the air compressor (6). Remove bolts that fasten it to timing gear cover.
Use care when the trunnion is removed to prevent damage to the crankshaft front seal.
6. Remove six bolts (8) and trunnion (7) from the timing gear cover. 7. Remove the bolts that hold the timing gear cover (9) in place. Carefully loosen the cover from the dowels and remove cover (9).8. Clean the old gasket from the contact surface of the timing gear cover and the timing gear plate.Install Timing Gear Cover
1. Install a new gasket on the timing gear plate. Cut the gasket even with the bottom face of the cylinder block. 2. Install timing gear cover (1) in position on the timing gear plate. The bolts in location (2) and (3) are tightened to a torque of 23 4 N m (17 3 lb.ft.). 3. Be sure the O-ring seal (4) is in position on trunnion. Put trunnion (5) in position on the timing gear cover and install the bolts that hold it in place. Tighten bolts to a torque of 135 14 N m (100 10 lb.ft.). 4. Install air compressor (6) on the timing gear plate. Be sure the breather tube clip is in position. Remove tool (A). 5. Install axle suspension pump (7). 6. Install air conditioning compressor (8) and alternator (9) and bracket (10) on the timing gear cover.
