A new 24-volt DC powered 161-0797 Governor Control (Load Share Module) is now available. It has replaced the previous 131-5459 Governor Control (Load Share Module) on the above listed engines. Other engine models will also transition to the new governor control (load share module) in the near future. During the transition period both part numbers will be available for part service. The above listed engine models will be factory equipped with the new part number when that option is ordered from the price list.
The former 131-5459 Governor Control (Load Share Module) is powered from the generator potential transformers (PT). This module is not powered when the engine and generator are not running. As a result the module is unable to provide a desired speed signal to the engine electronic control module (ECM). This condition created the following issues:
1. When the ECM is powered but the engine is not running, a 91-08 (Speed Control Output Signal is Abnormal) diagnostic is active. This may cause complications when monitoring systems supplied by Caterpillar or other suppliers are used to monitor the status of the generator set.2. Some generator and voltage regulator combinations (both VR3 and DVR) do not produce enough voltage at low idle to power the governor control (load share module). This results in an active 91-08 (Speed Control Output Signal is Abnormal) diagnostic code. When the 91-08 (Speed Control Output Signal is Abnormal) diagnostic code is active, the engine defaults to low idle and will not ramp up to rated speed.3. During troubleshooting or at initial startup it may be desirable to run the engine at rated speed without producing any voltage from the generator. To do this when a 131-5459 Governor Control (Load Share Module) is being used would require a different throttle signal source to be connected to the ECM. This involves disconnecting the governor control (load share module) and temporarily connecting a 9X-9591 Pulse Width Modulated Electrical Convertor or 9X-9647 Position Sensor to provide a valid throttle signal. The new 161-0797 Governor Control (Load Share Module) is powered by the engine's 24 VDC power supply and is not affected by these issues. The new module is backward compatible if 24 VDC power is added when using the new module as a service replacement for the previous module. When using the new 161-0797 Governor Control (Load Share Module) as a service replacement for the 131-5459 Governor Control (Load Share Module), see the Special Instruction, Installation of the 161-0797 Governor Control (Load Share Module) as Service Replacement for the 131-5459 Governor Control (Load Share Module).
