Personal injury or death can result from the engine starting. The engine can start and injure persons working on or near the engine.Be sure the engine cannot be started while service work is being performed. This is very important when the engine is equipped with an Automatic Start Stop System. On engines equipped with an air starting system, close the air supply valve to the air starting motor before service work is begun.
Drain the coolant to a level that is below the cylinder heads into a suitable container for storage or disposal. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Coolant (ELC) - Change".

Remove water manifold segment (2) in order for the cylinder head to be removed.
Remove exhaust manifold section (1) in order for the cylinder head to be removed.

Use the proper procedure in order to apply tension to the cylinder head studs. Failure to follow the correct procedure will result in damage to the cylinder head assembly and the cylinder block assembly.
Note: Tooling (A) has a guard that is not used in the photo.
Place pedestals (7) over the cylinder head nuts. These pedestals are a part of Tooling (A).
Place hydraulic cylinders (6) over the pedestals. These cylinders are a part of Tooling (A).
Attach Tooling (B) to Tooling (A).
Install collars (4). Tighten these collars with a ratchet lever (1/2 inch drive). These collars are a part of Tooling (A).
Loosen the collars to 1 1/2 turns.
Personal injury can result from oil under high pressure.DO NOT allow high pressure oil to contact skin.Wear appropriate protective equipment while working with high pressure oil systems.
Note: The stud tensioner tool groups in Tooling (A) require different operating pressure.
Run the pump in Tooling (A) until the operating pressure is registered on the gauge. Note: This procedure may require more pump pressure which will depend on the temperature of the engine.
Use dowel handle (5). Place the dowel handle through the slot in each adapter. Use the handle in order to turn the nut until the nut contacts the collar. This is equivalent to the passing of 12 holes.
Slowly release the hydraulic pressure and remove Tooling (A).
Remove the nuts and washers from the cylinder head studs.
Use the bolts that hold the rocker arm shaft in place. Attach Tooling (C) to the rocker arm support on the cylinder head.
Attach a suitable lifting device to Tooling (C). The weight of the cylinder head is approximately 204 kg (450 lb).

Before cylinder head (8) is lifted, use Tooling (E), a suitable sized block, and a pry bar in order to loosen cylinder head (8).
Pry only where shown in the preceding photo. Do not pry against the coupling assembly.
Carefully raise cylinder head (8) on the cylinder head studs, and remove the cylinder head.
