Hot oil and hot components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or hot components to contact the skin.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
The machine must be level and the parking brake engaged. The oil must be warm and the engine stopped.

Remove plug (1) from the bottom guard.

Note: Hand tighten the NTP pipe nipple. Do not use tools.
Remove crankcase drain plug (3). Install a 3/4 NTP pipe nipple 88 mm (3.50 inch) long, in plug adapter (4). Open drain valve (2). Drain the oil into a suitable container.
Close drain valve (2). Remove the pipe nipple. Clean the drain plug and install the drain plug.
Install plug (1) in the bottom guard.

Remove used oil filter element (5) and discard the used oil filter element.
Clean the filter housing base. Make sure that all of the old seal is removed from the filter base.

Apply a thin film of clean engine oil to the new filter element seal.
Install a new filter hand tight until the seal of the filter contacts the base. Note the position of the index marks on the filter in relation to a fixed point on the filter base.Note: There are rotation index marks on the filter that are spaced 90 degrees or 1/4 of a turn away from each other. When you tighten the filter, use the rotation index marks as a guide.
Tighten the filter according to the instructions that are printed on the filter. Use the index marks as a guide. For non-Caterpillar filters, use the instructions that are provided with the filter.Note: You may need to use a Caterpillar strap wrench, or another suitable tool, in order to turn the filter to the amount that is required for final installation. Make sure that the installation tool does not damage the filter.

Remove engine oil filler cap (6) . Fill the engine crankcase with new oil. Clean the filler cap and install the filler cap.ReferenceFor information on lubricants and refill capacities, refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Lubricant Viscosities and Refill Capacities" for the machine that is being serviced.
Start the engine and run the engine at low idle for five minutes. Inspect the engine oil filter for leaks. Stop the engine.
Maintain the oil level between the "ADD" and "FULL" marks on dipstick (7) . Add oil, if necessary.
