Stopping the engine immediately after it has been working under load can result in overheating and accelerated wear of the engine components. Follow the stopping procedure outlined below to allow the engine to cool.
1. Remove the load from the engine.2. Decrease the engine speed to Low Idle Notch for a minimum of five minutes to allow the engine to cool and systems to stabilize. 3. Check the crankcase oil level while the engine is at low idle. Maintain the oil level between the ADD and FULL marks. Refer to Locomotive OEM or Locomotive rebuilder's operation manual for starting switch and/or RUN/STOP switch system arrangement.4. The engine may be stopped by using one of the following typical controls. However, Caterpillar recommends use of routine (non-emergency) engine stopping procedure provided by Locomotive OEM or rebuilder:* Place engine RUN/STOP toggle in the STOP position.* Push STOP button on locomotive dash (or other location on gauge panel).* Push STOP button on either side of locomotive near each fuel tank. * Manual fuel shutoff lever located on left front of engine.Emergency Stop Procedure
If the need for emergency engine shutdown occurs, use the following procedure to stop the engine.
Typical ExamplePush the EMERGENCY STOP button. This will activate the fuel and air shutoffs.
DO NOT start the engine until the problem necessitating the emergency stop has been located and corrected.
Reset the EMERGENCY STOP system.
