Use Again - after polishing any raised areas around the bolt holes with a sharpening stone.Tooth Tip Chipping
Tooth tip chipping is caused by sudden impact loads. Chipping is especially noticeable on pinions with a narrow land width. Generally, gears with tooth tip chipping cannot be reused again, even in the reverse direction. However, gears with VERY LIGHT tooth tip chipping can be used again after polishing the tip with a sharpening stone and oil.

Tooth end chipping is caused by misalignment or contact with foreign objects. Whenever a gear has a tooth end chipping, always inspect for cracks. Gears with tooth end chipping caused by misalignment can be used again in the reverse direction if the chipping has not affected both sides of the tooth, and there are no cracks or other problems with the tooth. Refer to the section “Uneven Contact (Misalignment)” for more information.Gears with tooth end chipping caused by foreign objects can be used again if no cracks are found.

Do Not Use Again - teeth are cracked and chipped on the tooth faceHigh Temperature
Blue or black spots on the teeth are indications of high temperature. These gears can be used again if the gear is still “file hard” and there is no other damage. There will be no drag when a file is slid across the surface of the tooth if the gear is file hard. Only gears that are carburized and hardened such as input pinions, cluster gears, and cluster pinions can be tested with a file. Induction hardened gears like bull gears cannot be tested with a file. If a bull gear has indications of high temperature, do not use again.

Use Again - if there is no drag felt when a file slides across the teeth.
