ECM Replacement
If an ECM fails, there is a mechanism to install the attachment on a replacement ECM without charge. This process requires the use of the failed ECMs serial number. The ECMs 10-digit serial number is stamped on the outside of the ECM. Refer to Illustration 19.

ECM Serial Number FormatFollow the steps required for permanent installation of the new ECM. Refer to Step 9.b in the previous section titled ""Factory Password System (FPS)"". ECM Replacement Errors
Table 1
Possible Error Messages
Message     Explanation
Previous ECM Serial Number has not been billed for this reason code.     The ECM being replaced did not have this software-enabled attachment registered. To install the software-enabled attachment, enter the appropriate billing information to accept the charges associated with this attachment.
This ECM Serial Number reported as failed - no passwords will be generated. (1)     No passwords can be generated because the ECM was previously reported as a failed ECM. Verify the ECM serial number. If necessary, call the Caterpillar Software Attachment support number.
Passwords have already been generated for this combination.     Passwords have already been generated for this particular product serial number and previous ECM serial number combination.
( 1 ) Refer to Step 9.b in the previous section titled ""Factory Password System (FPS)"".Swap Detection
ECM swap detection is performed in order to prevent the inadvertent movement of an ECM that is used for a software-enabled attachment. Swap detection uses a "buddy system" with another ECM on the product. The specific software-enabled attachment documentation should specify if this feature is active and which ECM's are involved in the detection. If either "buddy" involved in this feature is swapped with a dissimilar ECM, the software-enabled attachment will go into a safe mode (and usually turn off). The software-enabled attachment will then report an event in order to notify the service person and operator that the product may have changed functionality. The event will indicate "Feature Mismatch with ECM Swap".There are two ways to clear this event. The easiest way is to swap the ECMs back to their original locations. If the ECM's are not swapped back, the event will become inactive after 20 hours (allowing enough time to inform most operators of changed functionality). Passwords are required to leave the ECM's swapped and to clear the logged event. Before clearing this event, update the product serial number on the swapped ECM's. A configuration item will become available on the service tool configuration screen called "Premium Feature Mismatch Reconciliation Status". This parameter can also appear as "Recon Status". Refer to Illustration 20.Passwords must be obtained in order to change the status of "Recon Status" from "Not OK" to "OK". When the status of "Recon Status" is changed from "Not OK" to "OK", the event will be cleared. Once the event is cleared, the ECM that contains the software-enabled attachment will assume that the attachments movement was intentional. The ECM will then return to its original status.
