If the lower housing of the aftercooler will be removed, remove the exhaust manifolds. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Exhaust Manifold - Remove and Install".Note: The upper housings and the aftercooler core can be removed without the removal of the exhaust manifolds.
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Drain the coolant from the cooling system into a suitable container for storage or disposal. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Coolant - Change".

Remove coupling (2) and tube (1) .

Remove coupling (5), bolts (3), and tube (4) .
Remove the remaining couplings and tubes from the left side of the engine.

Remove clamps (6), bellows (7), and bellows (8) from the air inlet to the aftercooler.

Disconnect tube assembly (9). Cap the openings.

Remove clamp (10) from the connection of the aftercooler and the exhaust bypass.
Remove bolts (11) and the washers that connect the rear aftercooler to bracket (12) .Note: The exhaust bypass must be supported or removed. The weight of the exhaust bypass is approximately 105 kg (230 lb).

Remove bolts (13) and the washers that connect the rear aftercooler to bracket (14) .Note: Perform Steps 10 and 11 only if the lower housing of the aftercooler will be removed.

Remove bolts (15) and the washers that attach tube (16) and flange (17) to the air inlet of the cylinder head. Slide the tube and the flange toward the lower housing of the aftercooler.
Perform Step 10 for each cylinder head.
