This diagnostic code is recorded when the ECM reads the signal from the engine speed sensor as erratic, intermittent or incorrect. A diagnostic code is recorded when the signal from the engine speed sensor is below the dropout value and the engine speed is above low idle. This problem prevents the ECM from calculating the ratio of the torque converter.The possible causes of this diagnostic code are listed:
The sensor has failed.
The sensor is loose or out of adjustment
An open in the speed sensor circuit.
A short in the speed sensor circuit.
The ECM has failed. This is unlikely.Note: Ensure that CID 0190 FMI 05 diagnostic code is active. The following procedure can cause new diagnostic codes to be recorded. Ignore these created diagnostic codes. When the procedure is completed, clear the created diagnostic codes.Test Step 1. CHECK THE RESISTANCE OF THE SENSOR
Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position.
Disconnect the machine harness from the engine speed sensor.
Measure the resistance between the two contacts of the connector for the speed sensor. Expected Result:The resistance measurement should be approximately 142 ohms. Results:
OK - The resistance measurement is approximately 142 ohms. The speed sensor has not failed. Proceed to Test Step 2.
NOT OK - The resistance measurement is not close to 142 ohms.Repair: The engine speed sensor has failed. Replace the engine speed sensor. Adjust the speed sensor properly when the sensor is being installed. Verify that the new sensor corrects the problem.STOPTest Step 2. CHECK THE SENSOR ADJUSTMENTThe key switch and the disconnect remain OFF. The speed sensor remains disconnected from the machine harness.
Loosen the locknut that secures the speed sensor to the housing.
Turn the speed sensor in a clockwise direction until the sensor tip slightly makes contact with the top of a gear tooth.
Turn the speed sensor 1/2 turn in the counterclockwise direction in order establish an air gap between the sensor and the gear tooth of approximately 0.89 mm (0.035 inch).
Tighten the locknut. Reconnect all harness connectors.
Turn ON the disconnect. Start the engine. Check to see if the CID 0190 FMI 05 diagnostic code is still active.Expected Result:The CID 0190 FMI 05 diagnostic code is NOT active.Results:
OK - The CID 0190 FMI 05 diagnostic code is NOT active at this time.Repair: The speed sensor was either loose or out of adjustment. Resume normal machine operation.STOP
NOT OK - The CID 0190 FMI 05 diagnostic code is STILL active. Proceed to Test Step 3.Test Step 3. CHECK THE RETURN CIRCUIT
The machine harness remains disconnected from the sensor.
The key start switch and the disconnect switch remain in the OFF position.
Disconnect machine harness connector J2 from the ECM.
Measure the resistance between the sensor connector contact 1 (wire 788-YL) and the ECM connector contact J2-16 (wire 788-YL).Expected Result:The resistance is less than 5 ohms.Results:
OK - The resistance is less than 5 ohms. The return circuit is correct. Proceed to Test Step 4.
NOT OK - The resistance is greater than 5 ohms.Repair: The return circuit (wire 788-YL) in the machine
