Dealers are reporting failures of 436-1478 Crankshaft Seal and 436-1479 Crankshaft Seal in certain applications. Failure rates reported to date vary widely between applications.Solution
Caterpillar is aware of this problem, but a permanent repair has not been identified. As an interim corrective action, Dealers who are not experiencing failures of 436-1478 Crankshaft Seal and 436-1479 Crankshaft Seal should continue to use them. Dealers who have seen an uptick in failures with the new seals may wish to use 113-8432 Crankshaft Seal Gp and 113-8433 Crankshaft Seal Gp, which are still available.Refer to disassembly and assembly instructions available in Service Information System (SIS) for replacing the crankshaft seal.Note: 484-7863 Tool As is required for 436-1478 Crankshaft Seal and 436-1479 Crankshaft Seal, and is not compatible with the former seals.
