Information:
This manual contains operation instructions and lubrication and maintenance information. Some illustrations in this publication show details or attachments that may be different from your engine. Also, guards and covers may have been removed for illustrative purposes.Continuing improvement and advancement of product design may have caused changes to your engine which are not included in this publication.Whenever a question arises regarding your engine or this publication, please consult your GMC TopKick/Chevrolet Kodiak dealer, who is an authorized Cat 3116 engine dealer for the latest available information.Operation
The operation section is a reference for the new operator and a refresher for the experienced one. Read-study-and keep it handy.Illustrations guide the operator through correct procedures of checking, starting, operating and stopping the engine. The operating sections outlined in this publication are organized to assist you with developing the skills and techniques required to operate your engine more efficiently and economically.Maintenance
The maintenance section is a guide to equipment care. The illustrated, step-by-step instructions are grouped by servicing intervals. Items in the "Maintenance Intervals" are referenced to detailed instructions that follow.Maintenance Intervals
The service interval for each item listed in the "Maintenance Intervals" is primarily based on the item and its relationship to either revolutions or load."Revolution sensitive" items such as water pumps, alternators, etc., are not primarily affected by the load on your engine during operation. Therefore, the service intervals established for "revolution sensitive" items are based on kilometers (miles) or service hours, whichever occurs first."Load sensitive" items are primarily affected by the load on your engine during operation. Therefore, the basis for establishing service intervals for "load sensitive" items should include a computation of fuel burned versus time or kilometers (miles) to determine load factors. The actual operating environment of the engine governs the maintenance schedule. Therefore, under extremely severe, dusty or wet operating conditions, more frequent lubrication and preventive maintenance checks than specified in the "Maintenance Intervals" may be necessary. These schedules were developed for use to detect problems prior to engine component failure. Each level and/or items in each level should be shifted ahead or back depending upon your specific maintenance practices, operation and application. For example, if more than one engine is operated in the same environment, use the inspection and repair records of the first engine to aid in establishing the preventive maintenance schedules for the remaining engines. We recommend that these schedules be reproduced for ease of inspection. We also recommend that a maintenance record be maintained as part of the equipment's permanent record. See the "Maintenance Records" section of this publication for information regarding documents that are generally accepted as proof of maintenance or repair.Your GMC TopKick/Chevrolet Kodiak dealer, who is an authorized Cat 3116 engine dealer, can assist you in tailoring your schedule to meet the needs of your operating environment.
