3G9549 Retainer out of alignment with hole in tip.When the pin is installed from the side opposite the retainer, the end of the pin hits the side of the retainer because of the first condition. Then the application of force to the pin can bend part of the retainer into the tip hole. The result is that the retainer is bent into a shape like a lockwasher. With this damage, the retainer will not hold the pin tightly in position.
To prevent this type of damage, and possible loss of tips, install tips and pins carefully. Check these points:
... Be sure the tip fits on the adapter, with the retainer in place, without contact. If the tip fits tightly, either: 1. Grind the inside of the tip for clearance.2. Grind the side of the adapter opposite the retainer counterbore.3. Grind the counterbore deeper, so the retainer is even with the adapter.... Be sure the holes in the adapter, retainer and tip are in alignment before the pin is installed.... Install the pin from the retainer side instead of the opposite side. If this is done, the retainer will have maximum support all around at the bottom of the counterbore.
