New Caterpillar Digital Ignition Systems (CDIS) have replaced the former magneto ignition systems on these engines. The new CDIS systems are more reliable than the former magneto systems. Also, the CDIS has better uniformity of timing between cylinders, and provides full ignition power at cranking speed.
The CDIS ignition controller must be remote-mounted (off the engine). The controller is supplied with a 6.1 m (20 ft) wiring lead for remote mounting.
The new CDIS system requires a separate 24 VDC power supply. New alternator kits are available for installations that do not have a 24 VDC power supply for the CDIS.
The alternator can only supply power to the ignition system. The alternator cannot supply power to any other equipment.Adaptable To: The new CDIS ignition systems are effective with G3408 (6NB1925, 6RJ67) and G3412 (7DB1482) Engines. Chart A lists the part numbers of the new CDIS ignition groups, the former magneto ignition groups, and the new alternator groups that are included on new production engines. Part numbers are listed for both standard applications and Canadian Standards Association (CSA) applications. The part numbers listed in Chart A are not available for parts service at the group level. The individual components of the former magneto groups will continue to be available for parts service. The new CDIS are adaptable to earlier G3408 (6NB1-1924, 6RJ1-66) and G3412 (7DB1-1481) Engines. Chart B provides part numbers for the CDIS retrofit kits for earlier engines. Chart B also provides the part numbers for the alternator kits, for use on self-powered installations (when an external 24 VDC power source is not available or not desired).
The Reference Special Instructions have been released to assist in mounting and setup of the ignition controller. Special Instruction, REHS0476, "Installation Instructions for the CAT Digital Ignition System for the G3408 and G3412" is included in the retrofit kits and discusses the installation of hardware to convert magneto ignition engines to CDIS. This Special Instruction also covers ignition timing adjustment and ignition system troubleshooting.
Special Instruction, REHS0486, covers the mounting procedure for the ignition controller, and will be shipped with each new engine. This Special Instruction also covers ignition timing adjustment and ignition system troubleshooting.
