This Technical Information Bulletin provides information in order to test the operation of the Caterpillar Monitoring System.Problem
The fuel gauge that is in the quad gauge module may incorrectly show the fuel level to be empty on the machines that are listed above. The problem may be caused by the main module of the Caterpillar Monitoring System that is faulty.Solution
Follow the procedure if the fuel level gauge on a machine that is listed above exhibits this problem.
Turn the keyswitch ON.
Wait for a few seconds in order for all of the gauges to become stable.
Turn one or more of the following electrical loads ON:
Front window wipers
Horn
Work lights
Roading lights
Blower motor for the heater and air conditioner
Operate each switch or a combination of the switches ten times in a rapid sequence.

Replace the main module if the fuel gauge becomes empty at any time during this test. Replace the 252-4501 Electronic Control Module or the 252-4503 Electronic Control Module .Note: The modules that may have this problem have a date range of 0738 through 3118. The format for the date code is DDDY. The date code is the first four digits of the serial number for the module. Refer to Illustration 1.
If the fuel gauge does not become empty during the test, then the main module is not the problem. Refer to the Troubleshooting section of the service manual for the Caterpillar Monitoring System for your machine in order to find more information on troubleshooting the fuel sender and the related wiring.
