Remove the torque converter. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Torque Converter - Remove".Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before you begin the disassembly procedure, the exterior of the components should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism. Precision components can be damaged by contaminants or by dirt. Perform disassembly procedures on a clean work surface. Keep components covered and protected at all times.
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Note: Mark the orientation of all components for assembly purposes.

Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to torque converter (1). The weight of torque converter (1) is approximately 66 kg (145 lb). Use Tooling (A) and the suitable lifting device in order to position torque converter (1) onto suitable cribbing.

Remove bolts (2) and remove housing (3) .
Remove piston (4). Remove ring (5) from piston (4) .

Remove retaining ring (6) and pilot (8) from housing (3). Remove O-ring seal (7) from pilot (8) .
Remove retainer (10) from pilot (8). Remove ring (9) from retainer (10) .
Remove O-ring seal (11) .
Use Tooling (B) in order to remove bearing (12) from housing (3) .
Remove ring (13) from housing (3) .

Remove the discs and plates (14) .Note: Note the order of the discs and plates (14) for assembly purposes.
Remove O-ring seal (15) and remove plate (16). Remove O-ring seal (17) and remove plate (18) .

Remove O-ring seal (19) .
Remove dowels (20) .
Remove bolts (21) and remove coupling assembly (22) .

Remove turbine (23) .
Remove hub assembly (25) from turbine (23). Remove retaining ring (24) from hub assembly (25) .
Remove plate (26) .

Personal injury can result from being struck by parts propelled by a released spring force.Make sure to wear all necessary protective equipment.Follow the recommended procedure and use all recommended tooling to release the spring force.
Remove stator (31) .
Remove retaining rings (27) and (33) from stator (31). Remove thrust washers (28) and (32) from stator (31). Remove thrust bearing (34) .
Remove race (29) from stator (31). Remove the rollers and springs (30) from stator (31) .

Position stator (31) onto a suitable press. Use Tooling (B) and the suitable press in order to remove cam (35) (not shown) from stator (31) .Note: Note the orientation of cam (35) (not shown) to stator (31) for assembly purposes.
