If vertical movement of center arm (2) is detected, center arm (2) must be shimmed. Use the following procedure to correctly shim center arm (2) to support (1) .
Ensure that center arm (2) is resting on the bottom of support (1) .
Insert as many shims (7) that will fit between the top of center arm (2) and support (1) as necessary. This is the shim pack that needs to be installed.Note: Refer to the Steering System Specifications, "Steering Linkage and Cylinder Mounting" in order to choose the correct shim pack.
Install shims (7) in order to shim the gap between the top of center arm (2) and support (1) .
Use the following procedure to correctly shim center arm (2) .Note: Do not reuse bolts.
Install pin (3), two bolts (4) and the hard washers.
Tighten the bolts to a torque of 250 10 N m (185 8 lb ft). Check the torque of the previous bolt. Continue to check the torque until the bolts do not move at a torque of 250 10 N m (185 8 lb ft).
Position lock (8) and shims (9) into the center slot. Use as many thick shims and thin shims as necessary. Install the shims and the lock while the bolts are torqued.Note: Refer to the Steering System Specifications, "Steering Linkage and Cylinder Mounting" in order to choose the correct shim pack.
Loosen and remove bolts (4). Install lock (8) with the previously determined shims (9). Add one additional thin shim.Note: Do not use more than two thin shims in the final pack. If three thin shims are required, substitute one thick shim for the three thin shims.
Install the bolts and washers.
Tighten the bolts to a torque of 460 15 N m (340 10 lb ft). Check the torque of the previous bolt. Continue to check the torque until the bolts do not move at a torque of 460 15 N m (340 10 lb ft).
Install lock (5) over both of the bolt heads.
Lock (5) can have four different orientations on the bolt heads. Use the following methods to install lock (5) :
Try lock (5) .
Turn over lock (5) from the front to the back and retry.
Turn lock (5) by 180 degrees and retry.
If lock (5) can not be installed, adjust the first bolt slightly within the tolerance and retry the lock.
Install retaining rings (6) in order to secure lock (5) to bolts (4) .
