Primary Filter Screen
1. Close the fuel supply and return valves. 2. The primary filter screen is in the fitting at the inlet of the priming pump. Remove the cover fitting, screen and the gasket.3. Wash the screen, the fitting and the gasket in clean, nonflammable solvent. Shake or blow all parts dry.4. Inspect the screen, the fitting and the gasket carefully. Replace any damaged part. 5. Install the screen, fitting, gasket and cover.6. Open the fuel supply valve and start the engine.Final Fuel Filter
1. Close the fuel supply and return valves (see the preceding topic).2. Remove the filter with a strap-type wrench.3. Clean the filter base gasket surface. Remove all of the old gasket.4. Lubricate the new filter gasket with clean diesel fuel.5. Install the new element by hand. When the gasket contacts the base, tighten the filter 1/2turn more.6. Open the fuel supply and return valves. 7. Start the engine and inspect for leaks.Belts - Fan and Alternator
Fan and Alternator Belts - Inspect Condition
Inspect the condition and the adjustment of the belts. Replace the belts in sets only if one or more are worn or damaged. 1. Inspect the adjustment. The belts should deflect 14 to 20 mm (9/16 to 13/16 inch) under 110 N (25 lb) force. 2. Loosen the alternator bracket bolt. Pry the alternator in the required direction. Tighten the bracket bolt. Measure the adjustment again.Batteries (Low Maintenance)
Low Maintenance Batteries with Refillable Cells Only
1. Remove each fill cap. Inspect the electrolyte level.2. If necessary, add distilled water to bring the electrolyte level to the bottom of the fill opening. At proper charge rate in a temperate climate, a battery will not require more than 30 cc (1 ounce) of water per cell per week.3. Install all fill caps.4. Close the battery compartment.Service Brakes
Test Holding Ability
Be sure the area around machine is clear of personnel and obstructions.Be sure the steering frame lock link is in stored position.Test the brakes on a dry, level surface.Fasten the seat belt before testing the brakes.
1. Start the engine, and raise the implement slightly. Apply the service brake (right brake pedal only) and release the parking brake. 2. With the service brake applied (right brake pedal only), shift the transmission to 2nd speed forward.3. Gradually increase the engine speed to high idle. The machine should not move.
If the machine begins to move, reduce the engine speed immediately and apply the parking brake.
4. Reduce the engine speed to low idle, shift the transmission to NEUTRAL. Apply the parking brake, lower the implement to the ground and stop the engine.
If the machine moved while testing the brakes, contact your Caterpillar dealer. Have him inspect and, if necessary, repair the service brakes before returning the machine to operation.
