Start By:
Remove the bucket. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Bucket - Remove".
When you are using hydraulic cylinders and puller studs, always ensure that the rated capacity of the puller stud meets or exceeds the rated capacity of the hydraulic cylinder. If the puller stud does not meet or exceed the rated capacity of the hydraulic cylinder, a sudden failure of the puller stud could occur. The sudden failure of the puller stud could result in personal injury or death.
Do not use threaded rods that have not been hardened as tooling with hydraulic cylinders. The maximum rated tonnage should be stamped on one end of the puller studs. Do not use threaded rods that have not been stamped with the rated tonnage.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
At operating temperature, the hydraulic oil is hot and under pressure. Hot oils can cause burns.To prevent possible personal injury, release the pressure in the work tool hydraulic circuit (boom, stick, bucket, and swing), travel circuits, and the hydraulic oil tank at the filler cap before any hydraulic lines or components are disconnected or removed.Remove the filler cap only when the engine is stopped and the filler cap is cool enough to touch.

Start the machine. Fully retract the bucket cylinder. Fully retract the stick cylinder. Lower the boom until the stick is lowered to the ground. Adjust the height of Tooling (A) in order to support the boom. Install Tooling (A) under the boom.
Release the hydraulic system pressure. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Hydraulic System Pressure - Release".

Disconnect lubrication line (1) .
Remove bolt (2) and the washer.
Fasten a hoist and a lifting strap to stick cylinder (4) .

Make sure that the threaded puller hole in the end of retaining pin (3) is clean. Fasten a hoist and lifting straps to Tooling (B) . Fasten Tooling (B) to retaining pin (3) . Use Tooling (B) to remove retaining pin (3) and the spacer.
Put a wood block under the stick cylinder. Lower stick cylinder (4) onto the wood block. Remove the hoist and the lifting strap.Note: Some machines may be equipped with shims between the stick cylinder and the stick.
Remove the shims at the rod end of the stick cylinder.
Remove Tooling (B) from pin (3) . Temporarily install pin (3) and the spacer. Install the washer and bolt (2) .

Note: Cap all hydraulic lines and cap all hydraulic fittings that are disconnected in order to prevent oil loss. This will also keep contaminants out of the hydraulic system.
Remove bolts (5) , the washers, and the split flanges in order to disconnect hose (6) .
