SEAL 8V1623 - Caterpillar

1. Park the machine on a level surface and apply the park brake. Block the rear wheels. Turn the start switch off and disconnect the batteries. 2. Use the lever extension from the machine tool kit to fully lower the front suspension. Hold the lever in the "lower" position until the hissing noise stops, indicating that the accumulator has completely drained.On two axle machines with rear suspension, lower the rear suspension in the same way.It is not necessary to lower the rear suspension on three axle machines. 3. Remove the crankcase guard. 4. Raise the hood and support with blocks or lifting equipment. The hood weighs approximately 70 kg (155 lb). Remove the two gas struts (1) and the two bolts (2). Lift off the hood. 5. Disconnect the three hoses at the torque converter. 6. Disconnect the three hoses from the transmission pump. 7. Disconnect the wires from the torque converter temperature sender unit (3).8. Remove the priming port plug (4) from the hydraulic pump suction line and loosen the hydraulic tank filler cap to prevent oil syphoning from the hydraulic tank when the hoses are removed from the pump. 9. Place a suitable container under the hydraulic pump, disconnect the three hoses and allow oil to drain. 10. Attach lifting equipment to the hydraulic pump and take up the slack. The pump weighs approximately 35 kg (80 lb). Remove the two mounting bolts. Pull the pump clear of its drive in the converter housing and and lower it out through the bottom of the machine. Discard the gasket. Steps 11 and 12 apply to machines equipped with a torque converter mounted retarder (TCMR). 11. Remove the four steel pipes (5).12. Disconnect the hose (6).13. Plug or cap all open ports and hose ends. 14. Install lifting attachment (A) or (B) with suitable lifting equipment, take up the slack and loosen the sixteen bolts (7). A torque converter WITHOUT TCMR weighs approximately 250 kg (550 lb). A torque converter WITH TCMR weighs approximately 500 kg (1100 lb). Take the weight of the converter on the lifting equipment and remove the bolts. Lifting attachment (A) is for use with machines WITHOUT a TCMR.Lifting attachment (B) is for use with machines WITH a TCMR. 15. Ease the torque converter backwards until the drive gear is clear of the flywheel housing then lower it through the bottom of the machine onto a suitable cart.18. Ensure that the converter has good stability on the cart and detach the lifting equipment.19. Move the cart clear of the machine. Torque Converter disassembly and assembly is described in Service Manual Module SENR2393, "Disassembly and Assembly - 615 Tractor Scraper Power Train", which is part of 615 Service Manual form SENR2386. However, the 615 manual does not include instructions for disassembly and assembly of the torque converter mounted retarder, which is installed on some Caterpillar Articulated Dump Trucks. Installation of the torque converter is the reverse of the removal procedure.
