Steering System
Relief Valve
STEERING PUMP RELIEF VALVE
1. Relief valve. 2. Hose assembly. 3. Body.1. Install a 5S4964 Plate Assembly (from the 5S5123 Test Group) between the body (3) and hose assembly (2). Use the parts in the test group to connect a 2000 psi pressure gauge to the plate assembly.2. Start the engine. Turn the steering wheel in one direction to the end of its movement. Hold the steering wheel in this position and run the engine at high idle.3. Read the pressure indication on the gauge. The correct relief pressure for relief valve (1) is 900 25 psi (6200 170 kPa.)
RELIEF VALVEIf the relief pressure is not correct, replace relief valve (1).Front Wheel Alignment
To assure ease of steering and satisfactory tire life, the front wheels must be kept in proper alignment. The alignment angles are commonly known as axle caster, wheel camber, and wheel toe-in. Only the toe-in is adjustable.Toe-in Adjustment
Toe-in is the setting of the front wheels so they are closer together in front of the axle than at the rear when measured at the wheel center height.Toe-in lets the front wheels run parallel to each other when the machine moves.
TOE-IN ADJUSTMENT
1. Tie rod end. 2. Tie rod. 3. Steering arm. 4. Clamp bolt. A. Distance between tire centers at front. B. Distance between tire centers at rear.1. Raise the front wheels off the floor so the wheels can be rotated (turned) freely.2. Rotate the wheels, and with a piece of chalk held against the center of the tire, make a mark approximately 1.0 in. (25 mm) wide around the circumference of the tire.3. Rotate the wheels again and make a thin line in the chalk line.4. Lower the wheels to the floor and place in a straight ahead position.5. With steering arm (3) in the approximate position shown, measure distance (A) between the thin lines at the front of the tires at hub height.6. Measure distance (B) at the rear of the tires in the same way. The difference between these measurements is the amount of toe-in or toe-out present. Distance (A) at the front of the tire should be .25 in. (6.35 mm) less than distance (B) at the rear of the tires.7. Loosen clamp bolts (4) in tie rod ends (1) if adjustment is necessary.8. Turn tie rod (2) until the toe-in is correct.9. Tighten the clamp bolts in the tie rod ends and move the machine forward approximately 24 in. (610 mm). This moves the wheels to a new position. Check the toe-in again.10. Do this procedure again until the adjustment is correct.Brake System
Removal Of Air From The Brake System
When the brake pedal resistance is spongy (not solid) it is usually an indication that there is air in the brake hydraulic system. The cause may be low fluid level, leakage in the system or a broken or loose brake line.
COMPONENT LOCATION
1. Bleed screw.1. Remove the cover for the master cylinder.2. Fill the master cylinder reservoir with brake fluid.
The brake fluid will
