Information:
Use this procedure in order to troubleshoot high oil temperature. Also, use this procedure if one of the following diagnostic codes is active.
Table 1
Diagnostic Codes Table
J1939 Code and Description Conditions which Generate this Code System Response
175-15
Engine Oil Temperature 1 : High - least severe (1) The oil temperature has risen above the trip point for the specified delay time. The code is logged.
The ECM may derate the engine or shutdown the engine.
175-16
Engine Oil Temperature 1 : High - moderate severity (2)
175-0
Engine Oil Temperature 1 : High - most severe (3) Probable Causes
Engine oil level
Engine oil cooler bypass valve
Engine oil cooler core
Engine coolant temperatureRecommended Actions
Note: The procedures have been listed in order of probability. Complete the procedures in the order of the listed test steps.
Table 2
Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Check the Crankcase for a Low Engine Oil Level
A. Check the engine oil level. Too little oil in the engine crankcase can cause the engine components to be starved for lubrication and the engine oil temperature to raise.
B. Ensure that the level indicator is calibrated correctly for the installation.
Oil Level
Result: The oil level is correct and the level indicator is correctly calibrated.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
Result: The oil level is low or the level indicator is incorrectly calibrated.
Repair: If necessary, add oil to the correct level. Ensure that the correct oil level is maintained in the crankcase.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
2. Engine Oil Cooler Bypass Valve
A. Ensure that the bypass valve is not stuck in the open position. Clean the bore for the valve.
B. Inspect the components of the engine oil cooler bypass valve for damage.
Bypass Valve
Result: The bypass valve is OK.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
Result: The bypass valve is NOT OK.
Repair: Free the valve or replace the valve.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
3. Check the Engine Oil Cooler for Damage and Plugging
Oil Cooler Damaged and/or Plugged
Result: The engine oiler cooler is damaged and/or plugged.
Repair: Clean the engine oil cooler core. Perform any necessary repairs.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
Result: The engine oil cooler core is not damaged and/or plugged.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
4. Check for a High Engine Coolant Temperature
A. Check for an elevated engine coolant temperature. A high coolant temperature can cause the engine oil temperature to increase out of specifications
Coolant Temperature
Result: The engine coolant temperature is elevated.
Repair: Troubleshoot any codes before continuing with this procedure.
Refer to Troubleshooting, "Coolant Temperature Is High" for information related to troubleshooting an elevated coolant temperature.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
If the procedure did not correct the issue, contact your Cat dealer Technical Communicator (TC). For further assistance, your TC can confer with the Dealer Solutions Network (DSN).
