Note: 0.5 hour is allowed for replacement of the rod only.
Note: If a rod cracks through to the core and causes a leak, preventing machine operation, the following labor may be claimed:
1. 81.0 hours to remove and install the front strut
2. 22.0 hours to disassemble and assemble the front strut
Note: If a rod is found to be cracked when a front suspension cylinder is rebuilt, then only the 261-5784 Rod can be claimed.
Note: If a rod cracks through to the core and causes a leak to prevent machine operation, then all of the parts can be claimed.
Place "See Story" in the Comments section of the warranty claim and include the Failure Data from the Action Required.

Handle the parts in accordance with your Warranty Bulletin on warranty parts handling.
Rework Procedure
Two types of failures can occur:
- If a rod is found to be cracked when a front suspension cylinder is rebuilt, replace the rod with a new 261-5784 Rod. Only the 261-5784 Rod can be claimed.
- If a rod cracks through to the core and causes a leak to prevent machine operation, all of the parts can be claimed.
For crack detection methods, please refer to REHS2099, Reuse and
Salvage Guideline for Front Suspension Cylinder Housings and Heads on
Off-Highway Trucks.
Refer to service manual as necessary. Refer to and follow KENR8382 for 797F, RENR2588 for 797B, and RENR2037 for 797 Disassembly and Assembly in order to remove and disassemble the front strut.
Reassemble and install the front strut per the Disassembly and Assembly procedures.
Note A: Measure the U-cup seal groove. If the U-cup seal grove width is 23.84 +/- 0.1mm, then the 459-7518 Backup ring is required. If the U-cup seal groove is 19.84 +/- 0.1mm, then the back up ring is not required. Refer to Image1.2.1.

Failure Data Request:
When a rod failure has been identified, please provide the following information in a SIMS entry:
1. Rod part number and serial number found on taper end of rod. Serial number may be scribed on the end.
2. Complete Rod part hours, including previous work orders since purchasing from Caterpillar.
3. Photo of the crack.
4. Distance to crack from tapered end of the rod. Refer to Image1.3.1.
5. Orientation and length of the crack. Refer to Image1.3.2.
