The 8 mm gap is required to accommodate the fillet weld that already exists and provide access to the root for the subsequent single v groove weld. See Image 1.11.1.
Weld complete as shown in Images 1.11.2 and 1.11.3.

Blend sand all weld starts and stops and tie-ins.
Visually inspect all welds to ensure conformance to acceptance criteria.
Follow appropriate welding guidelines as stated in Caterpillar field welding procedure REHS1841
All cut profile surfaces to be ground smooth to reduce stress concentrations and carburized surfaces (no notch or gouge permitted)
After repair, utilize dye-penetrant to visually inspect
After repair, needle-peen weld toe of gusset welds 100%

Gussets 9 and 10 have same profile. Rework will be the same.

All underfloor gussets will require 20mm of material removed, detaching gusset from stringer rail cover plate. Removal of material can be accomplished by using arc-gouging or oxy-torch. Caution in removal to not gouge parent material in stringer rail side plate. (Weld and grind gouge marks as required)
