Personal injury or death can result from improper lifting or blocking. When a hoist or jack is used to lift any part or component, stand clear of the area. Be sure the hoist or jack has the correct capacity to lift a component. Install blocks or stands before performance of any work under a heavy component.Approximate weights of the components are shown. Clean all surfaces where parts are to be installed.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Put identification marks on all lines and on all hoses for installation purposes. Plug all lines and all hoses. Plugs help prevent fluid loss and help keep contaminants from entering the system.

Typical example
Disconnect nut (1) and position hose assembly (2) away from differential (3) .
Illustration 3 g00856566
Typical example
Remove two bolts (4) , the spacers and the washers and then install Tooling (A) (not shown). Remove the remaining bolts (5) , the spacers, and the washers that secure differential (3) to axle housing (6) .

Illustration 5 g00856568
Typical example
Install four of the bolts (5) , which were removed in Step 5, into the threaded holes in differential housing (3) after removing the plugs that blank off the holes. Evenly tighten the bolts in order to break the seal between the differential housing and axle housing (6) . Continue to withdraw the differential housing out of the axle housing until there is a gap of approximately 10 mm (0.4 inch) before allowing the differential to be supported by Tooling (A) .
Remove two of the bolts (5) from the top side of differential housing (3) .
Illustration 6 g00856569
Typical example
Install Tooling (B) with bolts (5) and suitable washers into the two top threaded holes in differential housing (3) . Attach a suitable double chain lifting sling to Tooling (B) and to a suitable lifting device . The weight of differential housing (3) is approximately 280 kg (617 lb). Slowly take up the tension on the double chain lifting sling. Carefully withdraw the differential housing out of axle
