Disassembly Of Forward Or Reverse Clutch
In the discussion that follows, the input side of the transmission is the front and the output side is the rear.
Forward clutch cross section.
(1) Driving ring. (2) Driving transfer gear. (3) Forward clutch. (4) Input shaft. (5) Rubber block. (6) Drive spider.
Reverse clutch cross section.
(7) Driven transfer gear. (8) Reverse clutch. (9) Reverse pinion. (10) Manifold assembly. (11) Hydraulic pump. (12) Reverse clutch shaft. (13) Screen filter. The forward and reverse clutches have many identical parts, the parts called out in disassembly and assembly show the forward clutches. 1. Remove ring from the input shaft with a pliers. 2. Remove bearing assembly from the input shaft with bearing puller assembly.
Care must be exercised during removal of the rear tapered roller bearing from the forward shaft. Bearing puller must be installed in a manner, which will assure that removal pressure is applied behind the bearing inner cone without binding on the OD of the rear thrust race. Loose adjustment of the bearing puller will result in application of pressure on the bearing cage, which will destroy the bearing. Excessively tight adjustment of the bearing puller will exert pressure on the OD of the rear thrust race, which will either damage the thrust race or cause the thrust race to bind on the shaft, which could damage the shaft.
3. Removing pinion gear from the clutch shaft. 4. Remove two rear thrust races and the thrust needle bearing from the forward pinion gear. 5. Remove the two front thrust races and needle bearing from the input shaft. 6. Remove internal snap ring that secures clutch back plate to the gear housing. Remove the clutch back plate. 7. Remove the clutch plates from the gear housing. 8. Place special tool TD 300411 over the clutch releasing spring. Use a hydraulic press to press tool and compress the spring. 9. Remove the snap ring from the input shaft. 10. Remove the clutch piston by hitting the end of the clutch shaft on a piece of wood. 11. Remove the piston ring from the outer diameter of the clutch piston and the O-ring seal inner diameter.
Do not remove front tapered roller bearings from forward or reverse shaft unless replacement of the parts is necessary. Close tolerances between inner bearing cone and rear face of transfer gears prohibits installation of bearing puller behind inner cone.
12. If the bearing must be removed, proceed as follows: a. Split the bearing cage of front taper roller bearings and remove the rollers.b. Install a bearing puller onto the bearing cone, gripping against the shoulder on the cone.c. Heat bearing inner race by flash heating and remove inner race and cone.
Prolonged or excessive heating must be avoided so the input and/or reverse shafts will not be annealed.
Do not remove the driving transfer gear from the input shaft. The shaft and gear are supplied as an assembly.
