Repeat the same procedure for the fan pulley and the belt tightener bearing of the scraper engine.Batteries (Low Maintenance)
Check Electrolyte Level
Batteries give off flammable fumes that can explode.Do not smoke when observing the battery electrolyte levels.Electrolyte is an acid and can cause personal injury if it contacts skin or eyes.Always wear protective glasses when working with batteries.
According to your battery type, check the electrolyte level using the chart below. Tighten the battery retainers every 1000 hours on all batteries.Check the following at least every 1000 hours, and more often as conditions require: Clean the top of the batteries with a clean cloth.Keep the terminals clean and coated with petroleum jelly. At the proper charging rate, in a moderate climate, a battery should not require more than 30 cc (1 ounce) of water per cell per week. Check the cells weekly in extreme temperatures, cell water usage could be higher. 1. Open the battery access cover.2. Clean the battery surface with a clean cloth. Keep the terminals clean and coated with petroleum jelly. 3. Inspect the electrolyte level in each battery cell. Maintain the level to the bottom of the fill openings with distilled water. If distilled water is not available, use clean drinking water.4. Close and secure the access cover.Air Dryer
Inspect for Moisture
1. Open the two tractor air reservoir bleed valves. Check for moisture in the reservoirs. 2. Open one scraper reservoir bleed valve. Check for moisture in the reservoir. A small amount of moisture may be due to condensation.Moisture may be present if an air dryer was installed on a machine that was previously used without an air dryer.Several weeks may be required to completely dry the system.Brakes
Test and Adjust
Block the wheels securely so the machine cannot move when releasing the parking/secondary brake.
Maintaining proper brake adjustment is important. Brake pressure will become less as spring travel becomes greater.
Service Brakes
Be sure the area around the machine is clear of personnel and obstructions.Fasten the seat belt before operating the machine.Test the brakes on a dry, level surface.
1. Block the wheels. Start the tractor engine. Allow air pressure to reach the normal range on the air pressure gauge and the brake air pressure indicator on the EMS panel to go out. 2. Apply the service brakes. Push parking/secondary brake button (1) in to release the brake. Be sure the button stays in.3. Release transmission neutral lock (2). Move range selector (3) to 2nd speed. 4. Depress the accelerator (on 637E both accelerators) evenly and slowly. The service brakes should hold at 1200 engine rpm.
If the machine moved while testing the brakes, consult your Caterpillar dealer for brake inspection and repair. Make necessary repairs to the brakes before returning the machine to operation.
5. Return the accelerator(s) to low idle. Shift the transmission to NEUTRAL. Engage the transmission neutral lock.Parking/Secondary Brake
If the machine moves during the test, reduce the engine speed immediately, and apply the service brake.
1. Pull the button to apply the parking/secondary brake. Release the transmission neutral lock.2. Move the
