Retarding Information and Conditions
Ground Speed
Ground speed must be slow enough for conditions, at a rate that will not cause brake overheating.Engine Speed
Engine overspeed may cause serious damage. Keep the tachometer indicator in the green operating range.
Engine speed must be at least 1700 rpm to circulate sufficient brake cooling oil through the oil cooler to keep the rear disc brakes cool.Brake Oil Temperature
Observe the brake oil temperature gauge frequently. If the indicator leaves the crosshatched zone, the oil cooler capacity has been exceeded. Stop the machine. Run the engine at moderate speed until the oil cools. Then proceed at a slower speed in a lower gear.Downgrade Retarding
Never coast downgrade in neutral. Always keep transmission in gear.Attempting to stay in a lower gear on a long downgrade by retarding can be unsuccessful. Engine speed may reach the upshift point. The resulting lower engine speed reduces brake cooling oil flow and may cause brake overheating. The transmission upshift point is raised to a higher rpm than normal shift point whenever service brake or retarder are applied. The transmission will downshift any time engine rpm is under 1000 rpm. To prevent undesired upshifting, move the selector to the gear position you are retarding in.If the machine gains too much speed while retarding, threatening engine overspeed, use the service brake (with front brake switch on), until speed is reduced. The service brake pedal and retarder can both apply 100% rear wheel braking. Front brakes may also be used when necessary to slow to safe speed, but are activated only with service brake pedal, with front brake switch in ON position. This will allow more braking effort to be developed. Should the engine still be in danger of overspeeding, move the selector one gear higher to reduce engine speed until the machine slows. Then return the selector to original position.Use one gear higher until speed is reduced, and transmission has downshifted to original gear.Secondary Braking
The machines have a separate secondary braking air supply. The machine can be stopped with the secondary braking system, should a service/retarder air system failure occur. Pull the red lever on the left all the way back for emergency application of all four wheel brakes.Whenever an emergency stop is made due to any circumstance, recheck oil, fuel, air pressure, leaks, etc., and correct faults before attempting to move the machine. If brake release pressure cannot be obtained because engine will not start, see Towing Information to release rear brakes. Put blocks under wheels before leaving a disabled machine. If all air in emergency system is lost, the rear brakes will apply automatically, and remain applied. The machine can be positioned for loading and the brakes set, before shifting to neutral. Just as important, the machine can be put in gear before releasing the brakes to pull away. Engage parking brake when stationary.
To prevent damage to the parking brake, use the parking brake only for parking.
Loading
Use care when backing into the dump area. Stay clear of soft edges that could collapse under the machine.Lower the body (bed)
