TIGHTEN MAIN BEARING BOLTS ON 9N5190 AND 9N5669 SHORT BLOCKS IN PARTS STOCK, 1200, 1201, 1203, PI7074 U-4 A-2 AU-2 B-1 C-3 E-2 O-2 TT-0.1 Problem Approximately 150 short blocks were assembled with an incorrect main bearing torque. The final "turn" of the torque-turn tightening procedure was omitted. The connecting rod bolt torque is correct. Affected Parts (Parts Stock Action Required) Only the 9N5190 and 9N5669 Short Blocks with date codes of 9-83, 10-83, and 11-83 are affected. All other date codes are satisfactory. These short blocks are used in 3208 Naturally Aspirated Engines. Other 3208 Engine short blocks are not affected. Action Requested Rework all 9N5190 and 9N5669 Short Blocks with date codes of 9-83, 10-83, or 11-83. The date code appears on the top or side of the shipping carton. The code is also stamped on the block face near the No. 1 cylinder, as shown in the illustration. If there is no date code on the shipping carton or block face, rework the short block. Use the following procedure to retighten the main bearing bolts. (SEE ILLUSTRATION) 1. Remove the affected short blocks from their shipping cartons. 2. Loosen all main bearing bolts. 3. Tighten the main bearing bolts in the proper sequence, using the torque-turn method in the Service Manual for 3208 Engines. The proper initial torque is 40 +/- 4 N X m (30 +/- 3 lb ft). Turn the bolts an additional 120 degrees (ont-third of a complete revolution) after the initial torque is placed on the bolts. 4. Change the date code on the shipping carton and/or the block face to 12-83 to indicate that the rework has been completed. Warranty Allowances List 1.0 hours labor at your selling rate on the claim for each short block that was actually reworked. In the claim comments section on your claim, indicate the quantity of engine blocks that was reworked. Parts Disposition Not applicable. Termination Date July 31, 1984.
