This oil is used for lubrication and for cooling. The engine oil travels through the supply line from the engine to oil inlet port (1). Oil inlet port (1) is located on the fan control solenoid valve (speed control). This fan control solenoid valve is mounted on the bracket assembly for the fan clutch. The engine oil flows through the inlet oil port (1) into the shaft.Oil passages in the shaft distribute lubricating oil to the bearings and other internal components. Oil then passes through the clutch pack. This oil provides cooling to the clutch plates. The grooved configuration of the clutch plate assembly allows oil to flow over the clutch plates at all times.Centrifugal force carries the oil outward toward the inside diameter of the pulley adapter. The rotational movement of the pulley carries the oil in the direction of the pulley's rotation. The pitot tubes face in the opposite direction of rotation of the pulley. The rotational movement of the oil forces the oil into the pitot tubes. This oil is directed through a passage. A line from external oil outlet port (3) carries the oil to a drain port on the engine. The oil returns to the oil pan sump from this port.
The pitot tubes remove oil from the clutch, maintaining low internal pressure in the fan clutch. Do not run the engine without belts driving the fan clutch pulley. Seal damage may occur.
