In many cases there was no longer any asbestos content in the friction material but there had been previously, so a new part number was needed to establish a positive identification of asbestos-free product. All of these changes have created some confusion about which part to use where, and whether there have been any physical changes accompanying the part number changes.
6Y7965 - 216 mm (8.5") Outside diameter disc for D4H only: current production and parts service [nitrided core (high surface hardness), asbestos-free friction material] - replaced 6Y1697. (No significant physical changes.)
6Y7935 - 216 mm (8.5") Outside diameter disc for all other listed models: current production and parts service (medium hardness core Rockwell "C" 26 minimum, asbestos-free friction material) - replaced 6T8686 which had a low hardness core to become asbestos free, and to provide improved wear resistance for the core teeth.
For even greater tooth wear resistance or as an alternative in the event of parts shortage, the 6Y7965 Disc can be used in these models also.6Y7934 - 144 mm (5.7") Outside diameter disc for rotating clutch in all 3R × 3F models: current production and parts service (low hardness core and asbestos-free friction material) -replaced 6T8687.
