Do not use Caterpillar spin-on coolant conditioner elements on 3176 Truck Engines until the formulation is changed and new part numbers are released. The current Caterpillar spin-on coolant conditioner elements (9N3366-precharge, or 9N3717-maintenance) do not provide adequate protection for the aluminum components in this engine.
Caterpillar Liquid Cooling System Conditioner was reformulated some time ago for use in engines with higher aluminum content and is recommended for 3176 Truck Engines. Maintain a 3% to 6% concentration of conditioner in the cooling system. Caterpillar's requirements for supplemental coolant conditioner in cooling systems with 34 to 61 L (9 to 16 gal) are in the chart.
If an existing spin-on coolant conditioner is present, leave the "spent" element in place and do not replace it.
It is not necessary to "flush and fill" the cooling system if a cooling system conditioner element is present. If Caterpillar Antifreeze was used for the initial fill, simply add one 6V3542 [0.24 L (.5 pint)] Caterpillar Liquid Cooling System Conditioner at the maintenance interval. If any other antifreeze was used, add one 3P2044 [0.95 L (1 quart)] Caterpillar Liquid Cooling System Conditioner immediately and then one 6V3542 [0.24 L (.5 pint)] Caterpillar Liquid Cooling System Conditioner at the maintenance interval. In all situations, use liquid cooling system conditioner in place of the spin-on element.
Caterpillar can not make specific recommendations regarding the use of aftermarket coolant conditioners. If an aftermarket conditioner is used, consult with the manufacturer to determine formulation. A cooling system conditioner for 3176 Truck Engines must meet cylinder liner cavitation requirements and pass ASTM D2809 and ASTM D4340 tests.
