(11) Shims The torque converter updrive gears are in the torque converter updrive housing that is fastened to the rear of the engine. Drive gear (10) is connected to torque converter output shaft (9) by splines. The teeth on drive gear (10) are engaged with the teeth on idler gear (7). The teeth on idler gear (7) are engaged with the teeth on driven gear (2). Yoke (4) is connected to driven gear (2) by splines. Yoke (4) is fastened to the upper drive shaft which drives the transmission input shaft.Torque converter output shaft (9) turns drive gear (10). Drive gear (10) turns idler gear (7). Idler gear (7) turns driven gear (2). Driven gear (2) turns yoke (4). Yoke (4) turns the upper drive shaft. The upper drive shaft turns the input shaft of the transmission.Shims (11) are used to make adjustments to the end play of drive gear (10). Shims (8) are used to make adjustments to the end of play of idler gear (7). Shims (3) are used to make adjustments to the end play of driven gear (2).Torque converter (5) and pump drive (6) are bolted together and rotate as a unit at engine speed. Pump drive gear (6) engages with a driven gear from the transmission oil pump. The transmission oil pump is located in the lower section of the torque converter updrive housing.Reference: For more information on the transmission oil pump, refer to Systems Operation, "Gear Pump (Transmission Charging and Torque Converter Scavenge)".Oil for lubrication of the torque converter updrive gears comes from two sources. The main lubrication supply comes from the oil supplied to the torque converter lockup clutch modulating valve for the operation of the lockup clutch. This oil branches off the modulating valve and flows through a flow control orifice to a fitting in the torque converter updrive housing. This oil flows through internal passages to supply oil to the bearings of the torque converter updrive gears. The oil is also directed through drillings on to the meshing teeth of the gears.The other lubrication source is from the oil supplied by the transmission hydraulic control for the operation of the torque converter. This oil is directed through a passage in the torque converter updrive housing to lubricate the front bearing of idler gear (7).The accumulated oil in the bottom of the torque converter updrive housing is drawn through a screen by the torque converter scavenge pump section of the transmission oil pump. The oil is then returned to the oil reservoir in the output transfer gear case.
