Many of the connections between harnesses are made with rubber connectors. If these connections are not tight, they can be the cause of electrical problems, either permanent or intermittent (come and go). Make sure the rubber connectors are fastened tight before other tests are made.The 5P7277 Voltage Tester can be used to check if voltage is present in a circuit. It can not measure voltage.The 8S4627 Circuit Tester can be used to check circuits without voltage for continuity. The light in the 8S4627 Circuit Tester is dim (not much light) with a 10 ohm resistance in the test circuit. The light is brighter (more light) with less resistance in the test circuit.The 8S4627 Circuit Tester can also be used to check diodes. The point of the tester is positive (+) if the batteries are installed correctly. The tester light must be dim with the point of the tester connected to the anode of the diode and the clamp of the tester connected to the cathode of the diode (+ - or + -). The light must not be on when the connections are in the reverse direction (- + or - +).

The instructions that come with the multimeter tell how to use it in these different tests.Failure of an electrical component can cause or be caused by the failure of one or more other components. Always find the cause of a failure of an electrical component before a replacement of the component is made.
8S4627 CIRCUIT (CONTINUITY) TESTER
CATERPILLAR DIGITAL MULTIMETERUse an 8S4627 Circuit Tester or any Caterpillar Digital Multimeter to make a test (check) for continuity.Use a 5P7277 Voltage Tester or any Caterpillar Digital Multimeter to make a test (check) for voltage.Use any Caterpillar Digital Multimeter to make a measurement of voltage or resistance.If a measurement for voltage is made, with any Caterpillar Digital Multimeter (or equivalent), the voltage must be greater than 24 volts to have a "Voltage" condition. Any voltage less than 24 volts will be a "No Voltage" condition, unless stated otherwise in the procedure.If a measurement for continuity is made with any Caterpillar Digital Multimeter and more than 1 or 2 ohms resistance is found, first find the cause of this resistance and correct it. Then continue to troubleshoot the EMS operator panel.Because of the design of the EMS operator panel, it is possible for it to work correctly when a circuit that must have continuity has as much as 500 ohms (series) resistance in the circuit. This resistance is not a good condition and is an indication of other problems.
