3406E (6TS) Truck EnginesThe following is a list of new features and changes for the latest software release on the above truck engines. The software can be identified by release date "AUG96" using a Caterpillar electronic service tool. Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat ET) version 1.5 (or later) or Electronic Control Analyzer Programmer (ECAP) Service Program Module (SPM) NEXG4522, Version 1.9 must be installed in order to use the new customer programmable parameters. A list of the AUG96 FLASH files can be obtained using the Caterpillar FIND system (search document types: FLASH; keywords: 3176B [OR] C-10 [OR] C-12 [OR] 3406E). The AUG96 software is factory installed on truck engines effective with 3176B (9CK32685), C-10 (2PN3461), C-12 (1YN4984), and 3406E (6TS1). No 3406E (5EK) engines were factory built with the AUG96 software. When updating an older engine with AUG96 software, be sure to explain the new features and changes to the customers so that they can make the correct programming selections for their particular operation.
Features
1. Eaton Top 2 Transmission
The Caterpillar Engine Control Module (ECM) operates two solenoids to control the shifting between the top two gears of an Eaton Top 2 transmission. Super 10 speed Eaton transmissions will use this Top 2 feature, which requires the addition of 3 new customer parameters, additional options to three existing parameters, and four additions to the customer parameter lockout list. Each of the customer parameters is lockable and must be locked following programming by the truck Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM). In addition, each of the parameters must be correctly programmed for the system to operate correctly.
The three new customer parameters are Top Gear Ratio, Top Gear Minus One Ratio, and Top Gear Minus Two Ratio. The Top Gear Ratio is the highest gear ratio for an Eaton Super 10 Top 2 Transmission, while Top Gear Minus One Ratio identifies the next to highest gear ratio. Lastly, Top Gear Minus Two Ratio identifies the gear ratio for the highest manually controlled gear. For all three parameters, the programmable range is 0.000 to 3.750 in 0.001 increments. The default is 0.000 for all three parameters.
The three existing customer parameters which have also been enhanced are: A. Transmission Style - Eaton Top 2Indicates the transmission is an Eaton Top 2 requiring the ECM to operate solenoids to control the shifting of the Top 2 gears of the transmission. Eaton Top 2 transmissions require the transmission style set to Eaton Top 2, Multi-Function Output #2 set to Shift Solenoid, Multi-Function Output #3 set to Lockout Solenoid, and the Top Gear Ratio, Top Gear Minus One Ratio, and Top Gear Minus Two Ratio correctly programmed for the transmission to function properly. If the Transmission Style is set to Eaton Top 2 without the Multi-Function Outputs set correctly, or if the Transmission Gear Ratios are not programmed, a diagnostic code will become active. Multi-Function Output #1 is also required for Eaton Top 2, eliminating its use as a Power Take-Off (PTO) Switch ON Lamp.B. Multi-Function Output
