Use the two side lifting rings to attach the preload adjuster to a suitable lifting device.

Place the preload adjuster in position on the wheel.
Do not use an impact gun to tighten the bolts.
Tighten the five bolts no more than 1 1/2 to 2 turns at a time. Tighten the bolts in an alternating star pattern. Tighten the bolts to a torque value of 475 N m (350 lb ft). This will ensure that the preload adjuster will pull down evenly onto the wheel spindle and the hub.
If brake assembly is not installed, go to Step 18.m. Otherwise, continue to Step 18.l.
To avoid damage to the braking system, do not exceed 4150 kPa (602 psi) when applying pressure to release the parking brake.
Use Tool (E) (not shown) to release the front brakes. The front brake must be released with a pressure of 4150 kPa (600 psi).
Rotate the wheel at least three revolutions. Rotating the wheel will allow the bearings to seat properly.

Record the readings from both of the digital indicators that are on Tool (D). Average the readings from the two indicators.
Rotate the wheel one time. Record the readings from both of the digital indicators. Average the readings from the two indicators.
If the readings are consistent, continue to Step 18.q. Otherwise, repeat Step 18.o.
The average measurement from the gauges that were recorded in Step 18.p is the correct shim pack thickness. Do not deviate from the value that was recorded in Step 18.p. The gauges are preset.
Loosen the five bolts. Loosen the bolts no more than 1 1/2 to 2 turns at a time. Loosen the bolts in an alternating star pattern. Loosen the bolts until there is no thread engagement with the spindle.
Use the two side lifting rings to attach the preload adjuster to a suitable lifting device.

Remove the preload adjuster from the wheel assembly. Clean all the mating surfaces. Return the preload adjuster to the base plate. Hand tighten the five bolts.
Do not tighten the bolts to compress the springs while in storage. The springs must not be in a compressed state while the tool is not in use.
Note: The tool should be covered to keep out dirt and moisture. Store Tool (D) in the shipping box. Applying a light coating of oil to Tool (D) is recommended to prevent rust. Store Tool (D) in a clean, dry environment.

Use a micrometer to assemble shim pack (8) that is the thickness that was calculated in Steps 18.a through 18.t.
Illustration 17 g00632511
Position shim pack (8) (not shown) for installation.
Position retainer (6) for installation.Note: Use two people to install retainer (6). The weight of retainer (6) is 37 kg (82 lb).
Apply 154-9731 Thread Lock Compound to the threads of ten bolts (7).
Use ten bolts (7) and ten washers to install the retainer.
Tighten ten bolts (5) in a star pattern to a torque value of 1800 200 N m (1328 148 lb ft) as wheel assembly (1) is rotated.
