Receiving Inspection
Two-bearing generators are completely assembled prior to shipment. If the generator is received during cold weather, allow the unit to reach room temperature before you remove the protective packing material. Warming the generator to room temperature will prevent the following problems:
water condensation on cold surfaces
early failures due to wet windings
early failures due to wet insulating materialsUnpacking and Storage
Unpacking the Generator
Improper lift rigging can allow unit to tumble causing injury and damage.
Do not use the engine lifting eyes to remove the engine and generator together.
Unpack the equipment with care in order to avoid scratching painted surfaces. Move the unit to the mounting location. The unit can be moved by either of the following methods:
Attach an overhead crane to the eyebolts that are installed on the generator frame.
Use a lift truck in order to lift the generator. The hoist and the hoist cables should have a rating that is greater than the weight of the generator. When the unit is moved, ensure that the generator is completely supported by the lift truck's fork tines. Also ensure that the generator is balanced on the lift truck's fork tines. Slide the fork tines beneath the attached skid in order to lift the generator. Storage
Note: You must read and understand the warnings and instructions which are contained in the Safety Section of this manual before you perform any operation or maintenance procedures. When a generator is in storage, moisture condenses in the windings. In order to minimize condensation, always put the generator in a dry storage area. When possible, use space heaters to keep generator windings dry during storage. After Storage
After you remove the generator from storage, perform an insulation resistance check of the main stator windings. Use a megohmmeter to perform this check. Compare the resistance reading with the reading that was made prior to storage. If the readings are lower than specified in the Service Manual, it may be necessary to dry the windings. The insulation resistance check is described in Special Instruction, SEHS9124, "Cleaning and Drying of Electric Set Generators". A reading of one megohm or less indicates that the winding has absorbed too much moisture. In order to remove moisture which was caused by high humidity, use one of the following methods to make the generator dry.
Energize space heaters in generator, if equipped.
Put the generator in an oven at a temperature of not more than 85°C (185°F) for four hours.
Use a forced air type oven rather than a radiant type oven.Radiant type ovens can cause localized overheating.
Space heaters of the same type which are used in marine applications, can be installed on generators. See the Parts Book. These heaters heat the windings in order to remove moisture. The heaters should be connected at all times in high humidity conditions whenever the generator is not running.
Use a canvas enclosure around the generator and heating lamps in order to increase the temperature. Make an opening in the top for release of moisture.
Send a low voltage current through the windings in order to increase the
