Removal Procedure
Start By:
Remove the cylinder head. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Cylinder Head - Remove" for the engine that is being serviced.
Remove the engine oil pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Oil Pump -Remove".
Remove the oil pan plate. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Oil Pan Plate - Remove and Install" for the engine that is being serviced. Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the removal procedure, the exterior of the component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism.
Remove the ring of carbon from the inner surface of the cylinder liners.
Turn the crankshaft until two pistons are at the bottom center position.

Remove connecting rod caps (1) from the two connecting rods.
Place rubber hose or tape over the threads of the connecting rod bolts. This will prevent damage to the crankshaft when the pistons are removed.
Illustration 2 g01002790Note: When you remove the pistons do not allow the connecting rods to hit the bottom of the cylinder liners or the crankshaft.
Push the piston and connecting rod away from the crankshaft until the piston rings are above the cylinder liner. Remove the two pistons (2) and the connecting rods from the engine.
Keep each connecting rod cap with the respective connecting rod. Place identification marks on each connecting rod and the original location of the connecting rod.
Repeat Steps 2 through 6 for the removal of the remaining pistons.
