615C (9XG) Wheel Tractor-ScrapersSome of the 9X-3496 Fuel Level Indicators (gauges) with a date code of "M10" were assembled incorrectly. The "M10" date represents a manufacturing date of October, 1992. These gauges were assembled with a diode installed incorrectly. This could result in damage to the fuel level gauge and the fuel level sender. The incorrectly assembled gauges have been removed from the parts system.
An incorrectly assembled or a failed gauge can be identified by using the following procedure:
1. Turn the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position.2. Disconnect the wiring from the terminals of the gauge.3. Use a 6V-7070, 6V-3030 or 6V-7800 Multimeter, set on the Diode Test Position.4. Connect the red (+) probe to the "I" terminal of the gauge and the black (-) probe to the "S" terminal. The meter should read "OL".5. Reverse the connections. Connect the red (+) probe to the "S" terminal and the black (-) probe to the "I" terminal. The meter should read between .500 and 1.00.If the meter does not read as described in steps 4 and 5 above, the gauge must be replaced.
If the fuel level gauge has to be replaced, the incorrectly assembled gauge may have damaged the sending unit. The fuel level sender should be checked for correct operation.
Use the following procedure to check the fuel level sender:
1. Disconnect the two pin connector at the fuel level sender.2. With the multimeter set on the 200 ohm scale, check the resistance of the sender at the connector attached to the sender assembly. The resistance will vary with the amount of fuel that is in the fuel tank. If the fuel tank is empty, the resistance should read about "95" Ohms. If the fuel tank is full, the resistance should read "2.5" Ohms. A meter reading of "OL" would indicate that the sender is damaged and should be replaced.3. To check the fuel level sender assembly for intermittent (sporadic) readings, remove the complete sender assembly from the fuel tank. With the sender assembly removed from the fuel tank, the float can be manually moved between empty and full. The resistance should change between 95 and 2.5 ohms. If the meter reads "OL" or the readings are intermittent the sender should be replaced. When replacing the sender assembly it may not be necessary to replace the entire assembly but only the 9X-0346 Dial Assembly. The dial assembly mounts externally to the top of the fuel level sender assembly and houses the resistive element that may have been damaged.
