Loading On A Lowboy Trailer
Check the travel route for adequate over -pass clearances. Block the trailer or flatcar wheels before loading the machine. Remove ice, snow or slippery material from the loading dock and trailer, or flatcar before loading. The Automatic Engine Speed Control (AEC) Switch must be in OFF position during loading the machine on a trailer.Set the travel speed control switch to "LOW" before loading the machine. Never try to operate this switch when loading the machine on a trailer. To facilitate machine transportation, the track frames of this machine can be contracted.Properly adjust the track frames depending on transportation conditions.Basic standard machine shipping specifications are listed below.E450
1. Position the machine with the front facing the trailer. With the boom over the trailer, apply down pressure to raise the front of the machine. 2. Move the stick in and move the machine forward at the same time. 3. Raise the boom and swing the upper structure 180 °. Apply down pressure to raise the rear of the machine. Move the stick out while traveling onto the trailer. 4. Position the machine parallel to the trailer.Loading A Clamshell Machine
Always use a ramp. Never apply down pressure through the boom and clamshell linkage, to raise the machine onto trailer. When laying the clamshell on its side, be sure hoses are not trapped between the fork bracket and the trailer or flatcar bed when laying the clamshell on its side.
Tie hoses to the fork bracket to prevent damage.Securing The Machine
Comply with regulations governing length, width, height and weight of the load.Lower the implements. 1. Align the upper structure with the track and engage the swing lock pin.
Upper structure movement can cause personal injury or death. To prevent structure movement, inspect to be sure the pin is engaged.
2. Move the hydraulic control back to the locked position. 3. Turn the starter key switch to "OFF" to stop the engine and remove the key. 4. Lock all caps, doors and compartments. 5. Install the vandalism guards to the front window and cab door and lock them. 6. Block the tracks. Secure the machine with tie downs.Fasten all loose or removed parts securely to the trailer or flatcar.
In freezing weather, protect the cooling system with antifreeze, to the lowest outside expected temperature on the travel route. Or, drain the cooling system completely.
Lifting the Machine
Make sure the lifting cables and other lifting devices are strong enough to support the machine.Consult your Caterpillar dealer for the proper lifting procedures, size and type of cables and lifting devices. When lifting the machine, put the swing lock pin and the hydraulic activation control lever in locked position to prevent unexpected machine movements.Use guide or tag lines to prevent the machine from swinging or turning.
Place machine implements in the servicing position.Attach the front lifting cables to the lifting holes in the frame near the base of the boom. After lifting the machine approx. 50 cm (20") above the ground, stop lifting and check machine stability. If it is satisfactory, continue to lift.
