For photographic purposes, the engine has been removed from the vehicle. The Electronic Control Module (ECM), the Personality Module, and the Transducer Module are bolted together as a unit, which is then bolted to the side of the engine block. This procedure is intended as a guide for replacement of a faulty ECM. If the three modules are serviceable but must be removed as a group and later reinstalled as a group, then follow ONLY Steps 3 through 8 for disassembly, and Steps 16 through 21 for re-assembly. There is no re-programming necessary.1. Record the programmable parameters.a. Read and record Customer Specified Parameters and System Configuration Parameters using tooling (A). Refer to Form No. SENR5137, Electronic Troubleshooting - 3176 Vehicular Diesel Engine, for instructions on obtaining passwords and programming new ECM's. If the ECM is completely inoperative and parameters cannot be read, refer to Step 22b below.b. If tooling (A) contains the optional NEXG4512 Configuration Aid Service Program Module (SPM), these parameters can be stored in memory and downloaded later into the new ECM (refer to Operating Manual Form No. SEHS8834).c. For instructions on using tooling (A), refer to Special Instruction Form No. SEHS8742, Using the Electronic Control Analyzer Programmer, and Operating Manual Form No. SEHS9202, Using the NEXG4518 3176 Functions Service Program Module. The Digital Diagnostic Tool (7X6400) is not suitable since it can not accept alphabetic characters, and can not calibrate the speed timing sensor.2. Record the data required for factory passwords. Factory passwords will be required to reprogram the new ECM. In order to get these passwords, the following information will be required:a. Engine Serial Numberb. Full Load Setting (FLS)c. Full Torque Setting (FTS)This information can be obtained from the engine serial number plate. Refer to Operating Manual Form No. SEHS9202, Using the NEXG4518 3176 Functions Service Program Module, and the Electronic Troubleshooting - 3176 Vehicular Diesel Engine, Form No. SENR5137 for additional required information.3. Disconnect the negative (ground) cable(s) from the vehicle battery post.4. Disconnect two fuel lines (1) from the ECM (2).5. Disconnect the boost pressure sensor hose (3), and air filter hose (4) from transducer module (5).6. Disconnect one 40-pin electrical connector (6) from the ECM (2) by removing the Allen head screw.7. Disconnect the ECM ground strap (7).8. Remove four mounting bolts and washers (8), and remove the ECM (2) along with the transducer module (5) and
