Alternator Regulator
No adjustment can be made to change the rate of charge on this alternator regulator. If rate of charge is not correct, a replacement is necessary.
ALTERNATORAlternator Pulley Nut Tightening (Delco-Remy)
Tighten nut holding the pulley to a torque of 75 5 lb. ft. (100 7 N m) with the tools shown.
ALTERNATOR PULLEY INSTALLATION
1. 8S1588 Adapter (1/2" female to 3/8" male). 2. 8S1590 Socket (5/16" with 3/8" drive). 3. 1P2977 Tool Group. 8H8555 Socket (15/16" with 1/2" drive) not shown.Starting System
5P300 Electrical Tester. Make reference to Special Instruction Form No. SEHS7006 and to the instructions inside the cover of the tester, when testing with the 5P300 Electrical Tester.Use a D.C. Voltmeter to find the starting system components which do not function.Put the DISCONNECT SWITCH in the ON position.Scraper Glow Plug Circuit
Turn either HEAT-START SWITCH (one on the scraper and one on the tractor instrument panels) to the HEAT position. Check for battery voltage at the glow plugs. No voltage is an indication of an open connection in the wiring, a defective HEAT-START SWITCH, or on earlier 637D Scrapers, a defective GLOW PLUG MAGNETIC SWITCH (located on the tractor).Fasten one voltmeter lead to the connection (terminal) for the wire from the HEAT-START SWITCH on the GLOW PLUG MAGNETIC SWITCH. Fasten the other lead to ground. If there is no reading on the voltmeter, the wiring or HEAT-START SWITCH is defective. If there is battery voltage at the connection, check for battery voltage at the winding terminal connection for the wire from the ammeter. If there is battery voltage at this terminal, the ground wire may be loose or disconnected. If the ground wire is connected and the switch does not activate, the switch is defective. If there is no voltage at the magnetic switch, fasten one voltmeter lead to the BATT terminal on the HEAT-START SWITCH and the other lead to ground. If there is no voltage reading, check the wiring to the switch. If there is a voltage reading, the switch is defective.Scraper Starter Motor Circuit
Move either HEAT-START SWITCH to activate the starter solenoid. Starter solenoid operation can be heard as the pinion of the starter motor is engaged with the ring gear on the engine flywheel. The solenoid operation also closes the electric circuit to the motor. Connect one wire of the voltmeter to the solenoid connection (terminal) that is fastened to the motor. Connect the other wire to a good ground. Activate the starter solenoid and look at the voltmeter. A reading of battery voltage shows the problem is in the motor. The motor must be removed for more testing. No reading on the voltmeter shows that the solenoid contacts do not close. This is an indication of the need for repair to the solenoid or of an adjustment to be made to starter pinion clearance. If the solenoid for the starter motor will not operate, current from the battery may not be getting to the solenoid. Fasten one wire of the voltmeter to the connection (terminal)
