Procedure To Clean The Steering Valve:
1. Park the machine with bowl down, apron down and ejector all the way forward. Shut off the engine.2. Remove the hydraulic tank relief valve to release tank pressure. Install the relief valve. This prevents oil loss when the fill cap is loosened to release tank pressure.3. Remove the steering valve from the machine.
Before the valve is removed, cover the holes in the valve body for the hydraulic lines and plug the hydraulic lines. Do not let dirt get into the valve body or hydraulic lines. Any dirt or foreign material that is not removed from the oil passages may cause steering control problems.
4. Clean the outside of the steering valve and place the valve on a clean surface for disassembly.5. Remove the end cover at the relief valve end of the valve, opposite the valve stem tang. Remove the pilot valve seat and relief valve parts from the valve bore. See Illustration 1.
Illustration 1. Remove pilot valve seat.6. Remove the two plugs shown in Illustration 2.7. Tilt the valve body to remove the steel ball. To remove the seat assembly, use a steel rod that has a 3 mm (.12") diameter and make a 90 degree bend that is 6 mm (.24") long on one end.8. Put the bent rod into one of the holes in the side of the seat assembly. Use vise-grip pliers and a screwdriver to remove the seat assembly. See Illustration 3.9. Thoroughly clean the four passages for the ball resolver and the pilot valve. See Illustration 4. Inspect all seals for damage. Use new seals if any have cuts or other damage.

Illustration 4. Clean ball resolver and pilot valve passages.10. If necessary, install a new 1J9671 Seal on the seat assembly, a new 3J1907 Seal on the plug assembly and use a new 3K360 Seal under the plug assembly head. See Illustration 5.
Illustration 5. Location of seals for seat and plug assemblies.11. Install the seat assembly in the ball resolver passage with the screened end down. Make sure it makes contact with the bottom of the passage. Install the ball and the plug assembly.12. Install the relief valve parts. Use the same springs which were removed.13. Install the end cover and the internal hex plug. If necessary, use a new 4J7533 Seal on the hex plug. Use new seals between the valve body and the cover if necessary.14. Install the steering valve on the machine and connect all the lines removed.15. Check and adjust as necessary the relief valve pressure. The time needed to turn the machine from full left to full right and from full right to full left must be the same. Check the turn time with the scraper bowl empty and off the ground, with engine speed at high idle. Make reference to the chart which follows for pressure and time.
