Remove Camshaft
Start By:a. remove timing gear coverb. remove valve lifters and push rodsFluid Spillage Containment
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to "Tools And Shop Products Guide", NENG2500 for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose fluids according to local regulations and mandates. 1. Disconnect oil line (2) from the bottom of the turbocharger. Cap and plug all openings immediately.2. Remove oil line (2) and elbow (1) from the flywheel housing. 3. Remove studs (3) that hold elbow (1) on the flywheel housing. 4. Use Tool (A) to turn the flywheel enough so that three of four bolts (4) can be removed from the rear camshaft gear. Install Tooling (B) as shown. Remove the last bolt that holds the rear camshaft gear in place on the camshaft. Tighten Tooling (B) to disconnect the rear camshaft gear from the camshaft. 5. Remove two bolts (5) and plate (6) that holds the camshaft in position in the cylinder block. 6. Remove camshaft (7) from the engine. 7. Use Tooling (C) and a press to remove front camshaft gear (8) from the camshaft.Install Camshaft
Make sure the key for gear (1) is in position on camshaft (2) before gear (1) is installed.1. Heat gear (1) to a maximum temperature of 315 °C (600 °F). Install gear (1) on camshaft (2). Step 2 is for 3408 Engines only. The 3412 Engines do not have pin (3)2. Install pin (3). Install the pin so it extends 8.76 0.25 mm (.345 .010 in) above the surface.
Do not let 8T-2998 Camshaft Lubricant get on the bearing journals on the camshaft.
3. Put 8T-2998 Camshaft Lubricant on the lobes of camshaft (2). Put clean engine oil on the camshaft journals. 4. Turn the crankshaft so that the "V" mark on idler gear (4) is toward the bore for the camshaft.5. Install camshaft (2) in the engine. 6. Make sure "V" mark (5) on the camshaft gear is in alignment with "V" mark (6) on the idler gear. 7. Install plate (7) and the two that hold the camshaft in position in the engine. Steps 8 through 12 are for 3412 Engines only.8. Use Tool (B), if necessary, to put the bolt holes in the rear camshaft gear in alignment with the holes in the camshaft.9. Install one bolt (8) to hold the rear camshaft gear on the camshaft. Remove Tooling (A). Tighten bolt (8) to a torque of 27 4 N m (20 3 lb ft).10. Use Tool (B) to turn the flywheel so the three other bolts can be installed in the rear camshaft gear. Tighten these bolts to a torque of 27 4 N m (20 3 lb ft). 11. Put 9S-3263 Thread Lock on two studs (9). Install
