This supplement contains operation instructions and lubrication and maintenance information for the 140G motor graders equipped with All Wheel Drive (AWD).The hydraulic AWD is a traction assist device to aid machine operation in traction limited applications. The system consists of a separate over center variable displacement piston pump that supplies hydraulic oil to two drive motors located in the front wheels.The system pressure to the drive motors is controlled by a manually operated torque control lever in the operator's compartment. With the torque control lever in its rearmost position, minimal system pressure is supplied to the wheel motors.As the torque control lever is moved forward, pressure to the wheel motors can be set at any pressure up to the system maximum 34 450 kPa (5000 psi).The hydraulic AWD operates in gears 1 through 5 in forward or reverse. Maximum operational speed of the AWD is slightly above 26.0 km/h (16 mph). The AWD automatically free wheels when the machine is operated in sixth gear. The hydraulic oil for the AWD is obtained from the motor grader's standard hydraulic tank.The wheel motors are the low speed/high torque type. They have 10 radial pistons that work against an outer cam ring to supply full torque in 1st through 3rd gears. When the transmission is shifted from 3rd to 4th gear, all pistons remain in contact with the drive cam, but only four are pressurized and provide torque. The 140G AWD is designed to supply additional traction and steering control in traction limited applications. The AWD is less efficient than the motor grader's standard rear drive train.For this reason the AWD should be used only when required and at the lowest setting that will allow the machine to accomplish its task.This arrangement allows the AWD to operate through 5th gear. Installation of the AWD assist does not affect the unit's wheel lean or steering. The following chart shows the speeds at rated rpm, in forward and reverse.
The AWD at maximum rimpull requirement will absorb approximately 82.6 kW (110 horsepower) from the engine. Continuous operation at excessive high pressure will result in less power available to the rear drive train, High hydraulic system temperatures, high pump drive gear box temperatures and front tire wear.
High pump flow/pressure is required to obtain the maximum performance from the AWD system. Where high rimpull is required, select the proper transmission speed manual torque control position to maintain high engine rpm. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for the standard 140G machine for additional information.Some photographs in this supplement show details or attachments that may be different from your machine.
