Parts from Marine Engines are not being properly packed or marked before the parts are returned to the product group for a failure analysis. Please make sure that the following information is included with the parts when the parts are being returned for a failure analysis.
Engine serial number
Engine hours
Hours on the Part
Part Number that is causing the issue
Number for the Work Order
Claim number from the factoryNote: Individual parts such as water pumps and turbochargers should have a tag that is attached to the part with the above information. An entry should be made in the Service Information Management System (SIMS). The entry should include the following information.
A detailed service report with a explanation of the events that were leading up to the issue and the events during the issue
If the engine is an electronic engine all the Engine Control Module (ECM) downloads need to be attached to the entry into the SIMS.
Please make sure in order to include all the Alarm Logs, Histograms, and Current Totals. Also the ECM configuration parameters and the ECM monitoring parameters. When you pack the parts that are being returned make sure that you obey the following information.
Make sure that the parts are labelled with the corresponding cylinder number. This includes the engine bearings, valves, pushrods, rocker arms, and cylinder heads.
If the pistons are removed the pistons need to be marked indicating the position in the engine. This is true for cylinder liners as well.If there is more than one part in the same shipping container then each part must be individually packed and protected. This helps protect the parts so a proper analysis can be performed. This also protects the parts from moisture that may destroy important information that is needed for the failure analysis. Make sure that the receiving persons name is written on all the boxes.
