Batteries
Check Electrolyte Level
Batteries give off flammable fumes that can explode.Electrolyte is an acid and can cause personal injury if it contacts skin or eyes.Do not smoke when observing the battery electrolyte levels.Always wear protective glasses when working with batteries.
The batteries should be charged to a specific gravity of 1.250 or above, for adequate cranking power when the engine is cold.At the proper charging rate, in a moderate climate, the battery should not require more than 30 cc (1 oz) of water per cell every week. 1. Unlatch and open the battery box cover. 2. Clean the top of the batteries with a clean cloth. Keep the terminals clean and coated with petroleum jelly. 3. Inspect the electrolyte level in each cell of each battery. Maintain the level to the bottom of the fill openings with distilled water.4. Close and latch the battery box cover.Cab Air System
Clean Filters
Clean or change the filter elements when a reduction in air circulation is noticed (clean daily in very dusty conditions). 1. Raise the hood to allow the door in front of the cab to open. 2. Loosen the two screws and raise the door. 3. Remove the fresh air filter. 4. Loosen the two wing nuts. Remove the retainer and the recirculation filter.5. Gently tap the filters to remove excess dirt.6. Wash filters with clean water and allow to air dry. 7. Install the recirculation filter and the retainer. Tighten the two wing nuts. 8. Install the fresh air filter.9. Close the door and tighten the two screws.10. Close and secure the hood.Steering Cylinders and Link Bearings
Lubricate Fourteen Fittings
Lubricate six fittings on each side of the hitch. Lubricate one fitting on each side of the hitch.Ejector Guide Rollers
Lubricate Two Fittings
Lubricate one fitting on each side of the ejector.Adjust
1. The ejector should operate freely without binding. To adjust the guide rollers, loosen the roller shaft clamping bolt. 2. Turn the roller (eccentric) shaft to position the roller. 3. Tighten the clamping bolt. Clearance between the guide rollers and the scraper bowl should be .75 to 1.50 mm (.030 to .060 in).Ejector Carrier Rollers
Adjust
1. The ejector should operate freely without dragging. To adjust the carrier rollers, loosen the clamping bolt. 2. Turn the roller (eccentric) shaft to position the roller.3. Tighten the clamping bolt. Clearance between the bottom of the ejector and the bottom of the bowl should be 1.0 to 13.0 mm (.04 to .51 in.).Ejector Support Rollers
Lubricate Two Rollers
Lubricate one fitting at each roller.Adjust
Install the necessary shims to obtain the proper clearance between the rollers and the roller guide plates. The distance between rollers, outside to outside, should be .75 to 1.50 mm (.030 to .060 in) less than the narrowest dimension between the roller guide plates.Refer to the Service Manual for your machine or contact your Caterpillar dealer for the correct adjustment procedure.
