lb) pull test on each of the wires in the ECM connectors that are associated with the circuit.
Check the allen head screw for each of the ECM connectors for the proper torque. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for details.
Check the harness and wiring for abrasion and for pinch points from the sensors back to the ECM. Expected Result:All connectors, pins, and sockets are coupled and/or inserted and the harness and wiring are free of corrosion, of abrasion and of pinch points. Results:
OK - The harness and connectors appear to be OK. Proceed to Test Step 2.
Not OK - There is a problem with the connectors and/or wiring.Repair: Repair the connectors or wiring and/or replace the connectors or wiring. Ensure that all of the seals are properly in place and ensure that the connectors are coupled.Verify that the repair eliminates the problem.STOPTest Step 2. Check for Diagnostic Codes that are Active or Logged
Connect Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector.
Restore electrical power to the ECM.
Monitor the active diagnostic code screen on Cat ET. Check and record any diagnostic codes that are active or logged. Look for the following diagnostic codes:
678-3
678-4
3358-21
3509-3
3509-4
3510-3
3510-4
2131-4
3563-21
5422-21Note: Wait at least 30 seconds in order for the diagnostic codes to become active.
Remove the electrical power from the ECM. Expected Result:No diagnostic codes are active or logged. Results:
OK - No diagnostic codes are active or logged.Repair: There does not appear to be an electrical problem with the sensor supply at this time. If the problem is intermittent, refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect".STOP
678-3 or 678-4 Active or Logged - Either the 678-3 or 678-4 diagnostic code is active or logged at this time. There is an electrical problem with the digital sensor supply. Proceed to Test Step 6.
3358-21, 3563-21, or 5422-21 Logged - A -10 or -21 diagnostic code is logged at this time. The analog supply is not reaching the sensor or there is a problem with the sensor. Proceed to Test Step 3.
3510-3 or 3510-4 Active or Logged - Either the 3510-3 or 3510-4 diagnostic code is active or logged at this time. There is an electrical problem with the analog sensor supply. Proceed to Test Step 4.Test Step 3. Check the Supply Voltage at the Sensor Connector
Disconnect the harness connectors for the following sensors:
Fuel pressure sensor (filtered fuel pressure)
NRS absolute pressure sensor
Intake manifold pressure sensor
Restore the electrical power to the ECM. Note: Be sure to wiggle the harness during the following measurements in order to reveal an intermittent condition.
Measure the voltage between terminals 1 and 2 at the appropriate sensor connector.
Remove the electrical power from the ECM.
Connect all of the sensors. Expected Result:Each voltage measurement is 5.0 0.2 VDC.Results:
OK - Each voltage measurement is 5.0 0.2 VDC.Repair: The analog supply is reaching the sensor connector. There may be a problem with the sensor. Perform the following procedure:
Clear all diagnostic codes.
Run the engine. Allow the engine to warm up. Check if the code has been logged again. If the code becomes
