Application dictates when coupler rebuilding is required. An excessive amount of play between coupler and the attachment is an indication that wear has occurred. The coupler's top tube material is designed to wear before the attachment's hook casting. To determine if rebuilding is required, uncouple from the attachment and place a straight edge across the coupler's top tube. If the areas where hook contact is made differ more than 3 mm from original top tube diameter, repair procedures should be implemented.Using weld rod E7018 or equivalent, repair hook contact area by applying weld beads across the top tube until the original diameter is achieved. To help reduce acceleration of wear after rebuilding, grind high spots from the area where repairs were completed. The end result is for the attachment's hook assembly to make full width contact across coupler's top tube contact area. Review the fit of the locking wedges with the pockets of the attachment. If a play free fit can not be obtained the wedges may need to be replaced. After rebuilding the coupler, connect to an attachment and lock into place. Check if a rattle free installation has been achieved. Maximum allowable load
When carrier machines are equipped with front attachments other than buckets, lifting a load that is greater than shown in the Loading Chart for that machine could cause the attachment to rotate downward, allowing the load to slide or pitch forward resulting in personal injury or death.
The combined weight of the coupler, attachment and load must not be greater than than the maximum allowable load at the load application point as shown in the Loading Chart for the carrier machine. Consult the Loading Charts in this manual or in the Operation and Maintenance Manual for the carrier machine to determine your equipment's maximum allowable load and attachment combination. Contact your Caterpillar dealer before using any attachment other than the standard factory installed equipment.
