Information:
Note: If this fault occurs only under load, refer to Troubleshooting, "Acceleration Is Poor or Throttle Response Is Poor".Probable Causes
Diagnostic Trouble Codes
Active codes and logged codesParameters
Incorrect parameter settingsEngine Load
Accessory and/or parasitic loadsFlash File
Noncurrent flash fileAir Inlet and Exhaust System
Restriction in the air inlet and exhaust system
Proper operation of the turbochargerFuel Supply
Unstable fuel supplyInjection System
Unstable fuel injectionRecommended Actions
Note: The procedures have been listed in order of probability. Complete the following procedures in the order that is provided.Active Codes and Logged Codes
Certain diagnostic codes, event codes and/or derates may cause poor performance. Connect Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) and check for active codes and/or for logged codes. A status screen on Cat ET will display a derate if a derate is active. Troubleshoot any codes that are present before continuing with this procedure.Incorrect Parameter Settings
Verify that the correct engine parameters are being used. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Configuration Parameters" for the proper information.Verify that all of the application's parameters that are for parasitic loads are correct.Accessory and/or Parasitic Loads
Check all accessory equipment for problems that may create excessive load on the engine. Check for any excess parasitic load on the engine. Note: Make the necessary repairs to damaged components. Replace parts, if necessary. Refer to the application's service literature for additional information.Noncurrent Flash File
Verify that the latest flash file is installed in the Electronic Control Module (ECM). Refer to Troubleshooting, "ECM Software - Install" for the proper procedure. Restriction in the Air Inlet and Exhaust System
Check the air filter restriction indicator, if equipped. Clean plugged air filters or replace plugged air filters. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual.
Check the air inlet and exhaust system for restrictions and/or leaks. Proper Operation of the Turbocharger
Check for proper operation of the turbocharger. Unstable Fuel Supply
Visually check the fuel level in the fuel tank. Do not rely on the fuel gauge only.
Ensure that the fuel supply valve (if equipped) is in the full OPEN position.
Contact with high pressure fuel may cause fluid penetration and burn hazards. High pressure fuel spray may cause a fire hazard. Failure to follow these inspection, maintenance and service instructions may cause personal injury or death.
Inspect the fuel system.
Cold weather adversely affects the characteristics of the fuel. Refer to the engine's Operation and Maintenance Manual for information on improving the characteristics of the fuel during cold weather operation.
Check fuel quality. Check the fuel tank for debris or foreign objects which may block the fuel supply.
Check the filtered fuel pressure while the engine is being cranked. If the fuel pressure is low, replace the fuel filters. Clean the primary filter/water separator of debris. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for details. Also, check for the proper operation of the fuel transfer pump.Unstable Fuel Injection
Perform the "Injector Solenoid Test" on Cat ET in order to determine if all of the injector solenoids are being energized by the ECM.
Perform the "Cylinder Cutout Test" on Cat ET in order to determine the performance of each cylinder. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Injector Solenoid - Test" for
